Mithila Makhana: From Local Snack to Global Superfood

Only up until recently, the Mithila Makhana was countenance-seen in the kitchens of Bihar. Now, it's taking the world by storm. This crunchy white seed, known as fox nut or lotus seed, has perfectly earned the place of a health snack among people.

Primarily cultivated in the Mithila domain of Bihar, Makhana is harvested from ponds and wetlands, sun-dried, roasted, and popped till light, fluffy whiteness appears. What makes it special is its nutrition.

According to nutritionists, Rujuta Diwekar, Makhana may be designated as angel food: suitable for every person in every age group. The total constituents of Makhana per 100g:

9.7g protein

0.1g fat

76.9g carbohydrates

14.5g fiber

Very rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron.

Makhana is low in fat and high in protein, which makes it suitable for diabetics, hypertensives, and individuals on intermittent diets for weight loss. It also helps enhance digestion, gives energy, and slows down aging due to its antioxidant properties.

Ingredients needed for Makhana-based snacks:

Puffed Makhana

Ghee or olive oil

Rock salt

Spices (turmeric, black pepper, or chili)

Optional: nuts or curry leaves for extra crunch

Today, you can find Makhana in well-stocked supermarkets and online markets, awash with labels boasting of its "superfood" attributes. Going by one of its marketing strategies, big brands have flavored Makhana with cheese, mint, and peri-peri to catch the attention of global clientele.

From a humble local snack to something giving the concept of healthy living an active sense, Mithila Makhana has proved that traditional Indian foods are not just tasty but good for one and all.

So next time you are hungry for chips, go for a bowl of roasted Makhana, light, crunchy, and super healthy munch!
